Register To Vote

The facts about registering to vote in Michigan:

  • You must be registered to vote at your current address to vote in Michigan elections.
  • You can register to vote today through 8 p.m. on Election Day.
  • You have options to register, including online or in person.
  • You do not need a photo ID to register to vote.

If it's more than 14 days before Election Day, you have more options to register to vote in the next election, including online and by mail.

You can register to vote at the Detroit City Clerk’s office at 2 Woodward Ave #200 Detroit, MI 48226 Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

You must bring one type (paper or electronic copy) of “proof of residency” with you to register to vote in person:

  • Your Michigan driver’s license or state ID card
  • A utility bill with your name and Detroit address on it
  • A bank statement with your name and Detroit address on it
  • A paycheck with your name and Detroit address on it
  • A government check with your name and Detroit address on it
  • Any other government document with your name and Detroit address on it
Register to vote online (if it's more than 14 days before Election Day) Expand

You can register to vote online if it's more than 14 days before Election Day if you have a valid Michigan driver’s license or state ID.

If you do not have a valid Michigan driver's license or state ID, you can register to vote in person at the Detroit City Clerk's office.

If Election Day is in 14 days or fewer, you must register to vote in person at a Detroit Early Vote Center or the Detroit City Clerk’s office.

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Go to the Michigan Online Voter Registration System here.
  2. Verify that you have not updated your driver’s license or state ID address with the Secretary of State within the last 10 days or applied for a duplicate driver’s license or state ID today
  3. Verify that you are eligible to vote in Michigan (you are a United States citizen, you are at least 17.5 years old and will turn 18 before Election Day, and you have lived in Detroit for at least 30 days)
  4. Enter your personal information. The information you enter must match the information on your Michigan driver’s license or state ID.
    1. Full name exactly as it appears on your Michigan driver’s license or state ID
    2. Michigan driver’s license or state ID number
    3. Birthdate
    4. Eyecolor
    5. Last four digits of your social security number
  5. Enter the address where you live

Register to vote online at the Michigan Online Voter Registration System.

Mail in your registration (if it's more than 14 days before Election Day) Expand

You can mail a completed voter registration application to the Detroit City Clerk (even if you don’t have a Michigan driver’s license, state ID, or social security number). Your application must be postmarked in the mail 14 days before Election Day or sooner.

  1. Download a voter registration application here.
  2. Fill out your application, including your Michigan driver’s license, state ID card, or social security number. If you don’t have one, check the box “I don’t have a valid Michigan-issued driver’s license or Michigan-issued state ID card, or a Social Security number”
  3. Put your completed application in an envelope addressed to:
    1. Detroit City Clerk
      2 Woodward Ave #200
      Detroit, MI 48226
  4. Stamp your envelope and put it in the mail.

Register to vote on Election Day Expand

You can complete your voter registration and vote on Election Day at the Department of Elections (2978 W. Grand Blvd). Make sure you bring one type (paper or electronic copy) of “proof of residency” with you to the Department of Elections:

  • Your Michigan driver’s license or state ID card
  • A utility bill with your name and Detroit address on it
  • A bank statement with your name and Detroit address on it
  • A paycheck with your name and Detroit address on it
  • A government check with your name and Detroit address on it
  • Any other government document with your name and Detroit address on it
I don't have a photo ID Expand

You do not need a photo ID to register to vote. If you register to vote in person, you will be asked to show your photo ID. Ask to sign a simple form and then complete your voter registration. Bring “proof of residency” with you if you are registering to vote within 14 days of Election Day.
